ESSENTIAL SHOES YOU SHOULD OWN by Okikiola Adeboye

There is a very high probability that at a first impression, after your face, your footwear makes the biggest statement. I guess it is not a coincidence that in the whole armour of God (Eph. 6), it is for preaching the gospel. After that image of God on your face, let’s see the piece (peace) on your legs.

This article is not about how many shoes you should own but ESSENTIAL shoes that should be in your wardrobe to make you ready for any occasion you just might find yourself in. These are shoes that people will want to relate to when you say, “have you been in my shoes?”

These are my personal favorites and I’ll list them in order of how fanciful I feel they are when you rock them.  Let’s do ladies first

FOR WOMEN/LADIES

  1. CLASSIC BLACK PUMPS

A must for any lady irrespective of the age. Rock them with dresses, jeans, shorts and practically anything in your closet. Especially for a lady with a knack for black outfits, you need black pumps even more.

  1. LOAFERS

Polish your looks with this boyish flats. Add colour to your jeans and dresses.

  1. BROGUES

A personal favorite for me on ladies. It exudes class and smooth style. Goes well with mostly casual wears but you can go risky with office wears/ formal wears.

  1. STATEMENT HEELS

Sometimes you need to let off your steam with a pair of stilettos. Rock a red botton Louboutin. Let your feet do the talking with this head-turning, outfit-enhancing item. You can amp up even the smallest of outfits by donning a colourful pair. The most stylish for me are yellow, red, blue and pink.

You can go with printed heels – floral or tropical, polka dots or animal prints, or blings – embellished with beads, jewels and sequins or metals… that is why they are called “statement heels”.

  1. BALLET FLATS

For Sophistication without sacrificing comfort, seek a ballet flat.

  1. SNEAKERS

Give yourself a sporty spin with a pair of simple sneakers. Even get edgy rocking them with gowns and suits.

FOR MEN

The saying that “shoes make the man” may be an overstatement but a good pair of shoes sure makes us feel better. Here is a rundown of my personal favorite for men’s shoes.

  1. BROGUES/DERBY/OXFORD

As a classic man, nothing beats these items if you are on a formal level. Look more sophisticated when you hit out with casuals, a T-shirt and a jean trouser could give them a good spin. Make heads turn around when you even slay in shorts… These guys will just give you an all-rounder classic man look.

  1. LOAFERS

They can be used as substitutes for the brogues/derby/oxford look. Loafers are considered one of the ultimate indicators of the traditional or preppy look. For “owanbes”, wear them with those jaw-dropping agbadas and trad attires.

  1. MONK STRAPS

Single or Double… They will do for you what the brogues/derby/oxford and loafers will do for you.

  1. BOAT SHOES

Traditionally worn without socks, mainly for the purpose of ‘chilling’. Casual wears mostly. I don’t even see a reason why it should be worn formally. I recommend strongly that you wear with a cool t-shirt and a short with a nice baseball hat or boater hat.

  1. SNEAKERS

For casual looks too. But even now, you can dress down your suit with them. Very classy.

  1. MOCCASSINS

Comfortable and trendy for any type of looks.

Finally, to be happy, it first takes being comfortable being in your shoes. The rest can work up from there (Sophie Bush).
